#365zerowastechallenge WEEK 5 | Coffee grounds

2/8/2019

Like most other people I love drinking coffee in the morning. To avoid waste and to have a delicious tasting coffee I use a Bialetti. The coffee tastes delicious and what is left in the end are always the coffee grounds. Coffee grounds can be reused for multiple things:

How do I reuse coffee grounds?
First, make sure to dry them. To prevent the grounds from going mold, you should put the grounds on a plate after using them. Let them dry on a sunny place, for example by the window. When they are dry you can store them in a reusable jar.

  • Face and Body Scrub
Coffee grounds can be reused for exfoliation. The grounds activate your skin and remove dead skin and it smells great. Coffee grounds are probably one of the best and most sustainable body scrubs you can get. By reusing them you also don't need to buy any face or body scrubs. This means that you can save money and avoid creating waste.

  • Clean dishes and pans
On a zero waste talk I recently held a participant told me that coffee grounds can also be used for cleaning dishes and pans. Just place a bit of grounds on a cleaning rag and scrape away grease and grime.

  • Organic fertiliser
Coffee dregs have an almost neutral ph-value and are perfect to be used as an organic  fertiliser for plants.

  • Wormbox
Like us humans, worms love coffee too! In case you have a wormbox at home, you can give the worms the coffee grounds. Just make sure to not overfeed them, and give them enough fruits and veggies. Giving them to much of coffee grounds makes them hyperactive, which shortens their life expectancy.

Hey there, my name is Fiona. I love travelling and getting to know different cultures. Because of travelling I realised I don't need many things to live a happy life. My transformation started ten years ago with my first big trip to India, since then I live a very minimalistic lifestyle. For a couple of years now, it is not only minimalistic but also zero waste.

On this site you will find everything about zero waste, minimalism, waste and other kinds of topics.
